Making Buckeyes

"In the fall, along quiet small-town streets, children gather after school to pick up buckeyes, those glossy round treasures that fall off the buckeye trees after a frost. If Ohio were to declare a state candy, this recipe would be it."

-Marcia Adams, Heartland: The Best of the Old and the New from Midwest Kitchens.

yummmmmm.. we make these every christmas.. but have never called them "buckeyes".. i just call them "chocolate covered peanut butter balls" heh

wait, i think im missing something. you don't completely dip the pb ball in the chocolate? and is one different ? (i've been studying these photos and am starting to think im missing the point!)

You're right, they are only partially dipped so that they resemble the nut of the tree. The one that is different is an actual buckeye! A souvenir of when I lived in Ohio. It is showing its age, but it has great sentimental value to me.

Are you thinking of making some?

I wanted to drop a line and thank you for this very informative page. I mentioned to a non-Ohioan that I was making buckeyes. They had no idea what a buckeye was... neither nut nor candy... so I searched the internet and came up with this page. Terrific!!
