Mr. Met was reading Murray Chass' column this morning, headlined "The Yankees Loss is the Met's Gain" about Willie Randolph leaving the Yankees to become the Met's manager. Suddenly, he started convulsing with laughter. He was laughing so hard he fell off the couch! After rolling around on the floor for a minute he stuck his head under the couch and managed to compose himself. The column didn't strike me as all that humorous, so I asked Mr. Met what he found so funny. He snickered that he wanted to write a column headlined "The Met's Loss is the Yankees Loss is the Met's Gain". I looked at him, perplexed, when he shouted out like the reincarnation of Lou Costello "Third Base!" and doubled-up with laughter again.
Sometimes Mr. Met's behavior is so mysterious.
