The Anchorage Parking Situation

Assigned_parking

You'd think from the signs above that parking must be scarce in downtown Anchorage.  You'd be wrong:

I wonder why they bother charging?  About a quarter of downtown Anchorage is surface parking lots.  At night the lots were mostly empty.  I didn't even see attendants.

By comparison, three hours of parking near Rockefeller Center at night runs $30-40.

Unrelated:  Around this time last year I waxed ecstatic about Pere Ubu playing a live soundtrack to X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes at Prospect Park.   The performance was recorded and will be presented at 4pm next Monday on WFMU.  Rent the DVD and you can listen to their performance while watching the movie.
