Mets Van

Mets_van

Is Johan Santana moving into the neighborhood?  While cleaning my apartment windows this morning I realized it was plenty warm enough to go for a bike ride.  I got the bike out of storage, pumped up the tires and rode over to the East River.  The bike path along the river is falling apart!  More on that in a future post.  I was also only a couple of blocks from today's building collapse but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary happening.

I Will be Waiting

I happened to walk right by the taqueria I was looking for on 24th St. in the Mission District on Saturday.  All worked out for the best when the street ended at Vermont and I saw this awesome van.  The appendages covering the front wheels are big pieces of carved and painted styrofoam.  That's Nancy Reagan on the driver's side.  I can't believe I walked around the van and didn't take a close-up of the passenger side.   Then again, after a week of conference-going my mind wasn't exactly working on all three cylinders.

Flaming Mercedes

Sf_mercedes_flame

Well, I'm back from San Francisco.  The weather cooperated perfectly.  The skies were unusually clear for mid-December and the afternoon temperatures were comfortably in the mid-50s.   Much better than the rain/snow/sleet and cold of New York.  My car was encased in three inches of snow and ice.  I bet snow has never touched the Mercedes with the hand-painted flames on the passenger side.  The driver's side was not enflamed.  Perhaps it is a work in progress?

This trip was mostly work.  I had Monday afternoon free and I used that time taking poor shadowy photos in the Mission, eat a delicious super carne asada burrito and delight in a balsamic fig ice cream cone.  To redeem myself, I returned on Saturday to take shadow-free pictures.  And to have another super carne asada burrito (at a different place) and finish the evening with a brown sugar ginger-caramel swirl and lemon ice cream cone.

The week ahead promises to be busy.  I'm hosting Christmas for the first time.  Somebody's apartment needs to get cleaned and decorated quick!

Bug

Saw this old VW Bug on Sunday somewhere around 131st and Park Ave.  I learned to drive on a VW very similar to this.  Ours had a smaller dent in the hood and did not have a sunroof.

RV on the Viaduct

This RV has been parked on the Riverside Drive viaduct the past couple of weeks.  Could it belong to a new Columbia faculty member or grad student?  It gets moved for street cleaning so it's not abandoned.  The text was confined to the two sides pictured.

IT Car

Jumping around in a random fashion, here's an IT sedan we saw while in downtown Iowa City.  The IT sedan is manufactured by the Dynasty Electric Car Corporation of Delta, British Columbia.  The IT sedan is a low speed vehicle that can legally operate on streets with speed limits not exceeding 35 miles an hour at a "speed not to exceed 25 mph".  It, or IT, has a range of 30 miles per charge.  At least it's cute!

Closed

The sidewalk is closed and so is this website.  I'll be away on vacation for the next week.

To put yourself in a traveling mood, why not take an 18-second drive through Pennsylvania with the Go-Go's and me.

Swedish Cow

This Volvo is often parked near 116th and Morningside Avenue.

I regret not having my camera with me this evening.  There was a magician on the subway.  He had a hat, which he invited a guy to see that it was empty.  The magician lifted up the guy's girlfriend's legs up and swept the hat under her butt.  The boyfriend was asked to reach into the hat.  He reached in and pulled out his girlfriend's panties.  There was much shrieking of disbelief.  I was sufficiently entertained to give the magician a dollar.
