I went to a meeting at NASA Langley this week. There were a few hours to kill before my flight, so several of us drove up to see Historic Jamestown. It started to rain heavily as we arrived, the loop drive and visitor's center were closed because of damage from hurricane Isabel. Nonetheless, the skies quickly cleared and we walked quickly through the main site.

Mold
My room at the Courtyard Marriott in Yorktown, VA smelled a bit musty when I checked in Sunday night. The window didn't open so I turned on the fan to get some fresh air. This is what I saw when I pulled the curtains open the next morning. The colors in the photo on the left are true. The mold was a little darker than bubble gum pink. I've enhanced the image on the right to emphasize the mold. They moved me to another room, which did not have a mold problem. We found out that my friend Martha's room also had a moldy wall. I wonder if they are renting out 206 tonight?

Governor's Island

On Saturday I took a tour of Governor's Island National Monument. The island hasn't been open to the public for more than 200 years. The island was recently returned to the state of New York by the federal government and the National Park Service is leading tours of the National Monument portion of the island. Inside the Colossal Colon
Two views of the Colossal Colon's innards. The CC is 40 ft long and 4 ft high and made of plywood and polyurethane.
I was one of only two visitors to the CC this morning. My reward? A second frisbee!

Colossal Colon - sneak preview
I don't normally work in the city, but I had a meeting on the Morningside campus this morning. I had some time after the meeting that I walked up to 125th Street to see the colossal colon. The colon is on tour courtesy of the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation. The Colossal Colon is cool! You can crawl through it and there are numerous cut-aways illustrating the various diseases of the colon. The colon is in a large tent along with lots of educational materials. Free "Check Your Insides Out" frisbees, too!

nobby apple cake
Nobby apple cake was tonight's baking deed. The cake is nobby because it has more apple than cake. I used snow apples. The snow variety is the ancestor to the Macintosh. First person to comment gets a piece :).

Sleeping Geese
I caught these Canadian geese sleeping and grooming themselves in Harlem Meer (near 110th and Lenox) on Sunday. There were a lot more geese feeding on the lawn but they have the bad habit of attacking the photographer when he crouched down to get a bird's eye view.
