Based on a tip I read last week on Gothamist I went to Beard Papa Sweets Cafe on the Upper West Side (on Broadway between 76th and 77th) yesterday to try one of their cream puffs. There were about forty people on line yesterday so I decided to try again today. There were only about a dozen people ahead of me this evening.
Beard Papa is a Japan-based chain of cream puff stores. I think this store is their first in the U.S. Judging from the quality of the food it won't be their last. The cream puff I had was delicious. The cream puffs are filled using a special cream puff injector device as you wait. The puffs are then dusted with confectioner's sugar. Cream puffs sell for $1.25+tax. The pastry is crisp and chewy, and the filling is a creamy vanilla custard. I may get in trouble for saying this, but Beard Papa's cream puffs may be better than the cream puffs my sister makes. Though, my sister does melt chocolate on top. A definite plus!
Right now Beard Papa is only making cream puffs. Soon you will be able to buy cheesecake, as well as several mango desserts.
As their Korean website says, Beard Papa "pursues handmade, freshness and deliciousness, and paricular about the naterial and addition thing such as antiseptic never uses for health". I agree wholeheartedly and plan on making many return visits. So should you. Beard Papa is open 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week.
Update: Gothamist visited Beard Papa's on Sunday.
Update: As promised, I went back.
Yum! Thanks for sharing this.

The cream puffs are worth a trip to New York, or Osaka.

looks yummy, but there's no way i'd stand on line for so long just to eat them. i'll have to rely on my UWS friends to purchase them ahead of time...kinda like trying to buy bread at zabars on a saturday...
