Last night I went to a book reading and signing by Tom Perrotta. Among other books, he is the author of Election, which was made into the movie of the same name. His new novel is called Little Children. The reading was at the Barnes and Noble across the street from Lincoln Center. For reasons unknown to me, there were two security guards present. I've been to any number of readings and this was the first time I've seen security guards.
What needed securing, was not Mr. Perrotta, but rather my self control. While browsing after getting a book signed, I picked up a copy of Robert Sullivan's Rats, and Russell Shorto's The Island at the Center of the World.I started reading Perrotta's book before the reading began, the other two will go on the "to be read" shelf that currently contains (in no particular order):
- Selected Letters of Dawn Powell 1913-1965 edited by Tim Page
- The Goldbug Variations by Richard Powers
- The Reef by Edith Wharton
- A Tramp Abroad by Mark Twain
- A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird
- Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
- Lincoln at Gettysburg by Garry Wills
- A Void by Georges Perec
- I NY: New York Street Art by Kelly Burns
- Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin
- The Essence of Chaos by Edward Lorenz
- Look at Me by Jennifer Egan
- The Snowflake: Winter's Secret Beauty text by Kenneth Libbrecht, photos by Patricia Rasmussen
- Public Sculpture and the Civic Ideal in New York City, 1890-1903 by Michelle Bogart
Then it was off to eat. Unfortunately,
Beard Papa's had just closed so I couldn't have cream puffs for dinner. Instead, I bought take-out salmon and salad at the Westside Market. Feeling deprived of cream puffs last night, I went back this afternoon. Yes!
