Three more photos from Lenox Ave. This time walking north a few blocks. Lenox Avenue, and Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. one block to the west, were developed a little over a century ago, mainly for the upper middle class. These two streets are among New York's most attractive, or were at one time, and hopefully will be again.
There is a tremendous amount of renovation and new construction going on in Harlem right now. It is difficult to explain the scale of the building taking place. From my window I can see four buildings being renovated (including the building in my previous post) and one new building nearing completion. That's probably around 200 new apartments on roughly one side of one block. There are many, many other blocks in the neighborhood where a similar amount of work is going on.
One of these days I'm going to get all obsessive-compulsive and catalogue the construction taking place within a couple of blocks of my place.
Sunday morning power wash. I always assumed it was a dingy gray! This is one of the most handsome apartment buildings along Lenox Ave. It has sat vacant for years. You can't see it from this angle, but there is no roof and many of the floors are missing. Renovations started a couple of months ago.
Two murals on the side of a soul food restaurant at 123rd St. (I think. My reporting isn't very good as I've also forgotten the name of the restaurant. I ate there once. The food was decent but not great and it is a shorter walk to Amy Ruth's.).
