I'm not doing too well on my self-imposed break am I? Ah, well, I have a bit of spare time this evening because the Yankees game I was going to was obviously rained out (btw, I may be speaking too soon but I may have a mess of tickets available --we were going from work with a bunch of out of town guests who may not be able to redeem them).

For those of you who were wondering, I am feeling much better today. Not 100%, but much better.

Worst Weekend Ever?

Ugh. May I whine today? I came down with a cold over the weekend. A vicious cold. I fell asleep soon after getting home Friday evening. Forget that party I was invited to. Saturday I managed to do a bit of shopping and get a haircut*. Sometime on Saturday afternoon the teeth-rattling projectile sneezing started. Sunday more projectile sneezing. I went out for a walk but my energy flagged after about half an hour. The special edition wing night was definitely out. Not only did I not have enough energy, I knew the combination of hot sauce and a nose full of snot would lead to socially unacceptable behavior. Drat! Saturday night was mostly feverish. Nothing like waking up at 3am to cold sweaty pillows and sheets. Yesterday I was exhausted. I alternated between napping and staring into space. No grilled pizza for me. Double drat! So much for enjoying the holiday weekend.

*A guy with hair about 3/16 of an inch long was getting a haircut as I waited at Supercuts. Not only was his hair short, it was thin. He had very specific instructions: longer on top, shorter on the sides. He explained that he gets his hair cut every 3-4 days but his regular barber was away for the holiday weekend.

The reason I went to Union Square early yesterday morning was not to look at protester leftovers, but to get some fresh produce. I rarely look at the price of the food, so I have little idea whether any of these prices are reasonable. How do they compare to what you pay? One of the fruit growers also has a stand at I.S. 77 on Sundays. I did notice that his peaches were half the price there vs. Union Square.

I bought six pounds of plain old Roma tomatoes for sauce. They were only a dollar per pound. Other things I bought: bunch of oregano; bunch of orange carrots; sweet peppers; a small watermelon; peaches; apricot-anise scone; and a small chocolate milk. The latter three were breakfast.

A little break in my break. While I was at the Union Square Greenmarket this morning I noticed there were still a few physical remnants of the RNC protestors.

I need to take a break from this. Plus, next week is going to be busy at work. I might sneak in a post or two, but don't much new in this space until next Friday or Saturday at the earliest.

Satch Sanders was born here

I found out yesterday afternoon that one of the NBA's great unsung players was born on my block. Walking toward Fifth Avenue I saw this handmade sign attached to a chain link fence.

Thomas "Satch" Sanders was a great defensive forward for the Boston Celtics in the 1960s. The Celtics won eight NBA championships with Sanders on the team. Of course, having Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Sam Jones, KC Jones and others as your teammates helps. In 1961 Sanders and the other African-American players refused to play an exhibition game in Lexington, Kentucky after they were refused service in a local diner. His #16 uniform was retired in 1973. After retiring from playing Sanders coached the Harvard team from 1973-1977 and the Celtics for a couple of seasons after that. Today Satch Sanders is an NBA Vice-President and Director of Player Programs.
