The hotel I stayed at is in the foreground.
Downtown Valdez. The brown building extending from the left houses the Pipeline Club, where Captain Hazelwood got drunk before running the Exxon Valdez aground. The red-roofed buildings in the center are the museum, library, city government and fire departments.
More downtown, looking northeast.
Marina
Across the bay.
Pipeline terminal.
There's a little hill in downtown Valdez that's an excellent spot to see the whole town. Excellent except for the mosquitos, that is. Even though I spent a lot of time outdoors the legendary Alaskan mosquitos only bothered me in a couple of places -downtown Valdez (on this hill at at the ferry dock), and at the drunken forest.
As you can see, Valdez is in a beautiful setting. You might also notice that the layout and architecture of the town is unusual. Valdez averages 330 inches of snow in winter. The empty spaces between buildings are so that there is somewhere to put the snow when the streets are plowed.
