Another weekend, another bike ride. This time I took the D train to the end of the line in the Bronx and rode home from there. Beyond the end of the D train line lies Woodlawn Cemetery. It wasn't my intent to visit, but it looked so peaceful. The security guard stopped me because cycling isn't allowed. She was nice and offered me a map. I only saw a little bit of the cemetery. It is beautifully landscaped with many monumental monuments. Weekend tours are available through the fall.
Walking around the cemetery was enjoyable but not the purpose of my trip. Van Cortland Park is across the street and I spent many fruitless minutes trying to find a way to ride across it. Giving up, I headed south in the general direction of Bronx Community College and the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. Little did I suspect that the campus and Hall would be closed. Ah, well, at least I got some exercise, the Bronx is hilly!
That Woolworth mausoleum is surprising. I'd love to know what statue represents.

The tomb's stained-glass window also has an Egyptian motif.
Have you been to the Woolworth Building? It's a little over the top. The Five-and-Dimes may have been restrained but old F.W. had exuberant personal tastes.
