North of 110th St. Amsterdam Ave is a two way street. South of 110th Amsterdam runs one way --uptown. I don't remember if there was a barrier at the intersection to prevent cars from suddenly going against traffic. In the last few weeks the city has been putting in this little greenspace so that it is pretty clear you shouldn't continue driving downtown past 110th Street.
That's the Cathederal Church of St. John the Divine on the right in the bottom photo. George Gershwin once lived in the brick building in the same photo.
There used to be a bunch of ugly signs warning northbound traffic below 110th to keep right and warning southbound traffic above 110th not to enter.
This is much nicer.
