A couple of years ago plans were announced to build a 475 foot high building at the corner of 125th Street and Park Avenue. The building, Harlem Park, was to hold a Marriott hotel, a jazz club, and lots of office space. I walked by the site yesterday intending to photograph the progress. There is a plywood fence around the lot, and the banner in the upper right side of the photo, otherwise there isn't any sign of construction. The website on the banner, www.harlempark.com is non-functional.
The hotel was originally scheduled to open last month. Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg attended a groundbreaking ceremony last February, at which it was announced that the building would be open in late-2006. An RCN press release also says the building is to open in late-2006. I wonder if the project is still on? Oh, well, without the real thing I guess we'll have to entertain ourselves with these renderings.
Bloomberg loves groundbreaking.

I, too, have been trying to get updates and follow the progress on the Harlem Park project. The website (www.HarlemPark.com) is functional, but the press updates are dated March 2005 and earlier. I tried emailing the press office and got no response.
As a soon-to-be new homeowner in East Harlem, I am excited about the economic impact the project will have on the surrounding neighborhood. I have word from a friend who is also following the situation that one of the financial partners who has been forcing the project to drag has now agreed to sell his share. Hopefully, this means that a real timetable will be set and construction beyond a ceremonial groundbreaking will begin.
Fingers crossed.
