The Irish Hunger Memorial is a couple of blocks west of the World Trade Center site. The memorial, by Brian Tolle, is designed to look like an abandoned Irish cottage. It features vegetation native to Ireland and stones from each of Ireland's thirty-two counties. The meadow rises from street level to twenty-five feet above ground, from which you can see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The lit strips in the last photo surround the outside as well. They contain quotations concerning the Great Famine and migration of 1845-1852, as well as quotes from other regions chronically beset by hunger. It is best visited on a cool, rainy day.
Special Bonus! Scroll up and down on that last image for weird optical effects (thanks, Tien!).
