Hill Cumorah
Moroni the angel
Moroni the cat
At the same time the Erie Canal was in its heyday, upstate New York from Albany to Buffalo to points westward such as northern Ohio were undergoing a cultural revolution of sorts. It was the time of the Second Great Awakening, a period of religious revival and evangelism. The awakening led to the prison reform movement, abolition of slavery, women's rights and the temperance movement. Central and western New York were hotbeds of utopian societies and communal living such as the Oneida Community and the Shakers, Spiritualism, and the Millerites, who believed the second coming was going to occur on October 22nd, 1844. The movement was so great in western New York that the area has been called the burned-over district because there was no more fuel (unconverted) to burn (convert). (Note: The burned-over district shouldn't be confused with the Firelands, which is in Ohio).
One movement got its start on the hill above. Hill Cumorah, which for you geology buffs was formed by an advancing ice sheet and is known as a drumlin, is where Joseph Smith claims to have been given golden plates by the angel Moroni. Smith then translated the plates into the Book of Mormon. Every July the church puts on the Hill Cumorah Pageant.
I was told that Moroni the cat had the run of the place.
This is so cool! I've been to the hill cumorah before with my family! I got to go type back bye.
