A French bakery recently opened on west 23rd St. I had heard they made tasty macaroons. I was in the neighborhood last weekend and decided to give them a try. Macaroons had pride of place, filling the entire width of a double-wide bakery case.
I don't speak French, and the two women behind the counter spoke little English. The lack of a common language made inquiries into the various flavors of macaroons a challenge. Relief swept the shop when we settled on three different types. I also pointed to the gold-topped macaroon and got it as well. Clockwise from the top they are: Rose, chocolate, lemon, and champagne (allegedly with apricot filing) and a little gold on top.
Had I known the rose was rose I wouldn't have gotten it. Not a big fan of the flower-flavored desserts. By "not a big fan" I mean the rose macaroon was totally gross and got spat onto the sidewalk. The rest were pretty good. The chocolate was overly gooey with filling but tasted fine. For me, the standouts of this group were the lemon and champagne.
macaroon!I'm so love it!
