i inquired about this while in salt lake city and was told that the streets of mormon towns were designed wide enough to allow for a team of horses to make a u-turn
i guess to escape the natives (?)


That may be right. According to Wikipedia "The streets are relatively wide, at the direction of Brigham Young, who wanted them wide enough that a wagon team could turn around without 'resorting to profanity.'"
