One thing the University of Nebraska does well is modern art. The two campuses in Lincoln are filled with works by important artists. Above is Old Glory by Abstract Expressionist sculptor Mark di Suvero.
I walked by the sculpture at least a couple of times a day, almost every day, for four years. In true Nebraska fashion I have to state that this sculpture cost a lot more than the rocks. Old Glory looked out of place when planted here in the mid-1980s but it fits better now that it is surrounded by more greenery. It should be noted, however, that the sculpture sits in the western half of the Willa Cather native plant garden, which is mostly regular old grass that was irrigated and mowed on a regular basis and not native plants.
Happy Flag Day!
Ahhh--the good old special K!

I managed to forget or never learn what that thing was supposed to be despite going by it a jillion times to and from Oldfather. UNL certainly does have a knack for investing in abstract sculptures the public usually gets furious about. In the 90's it was the Torn Notebook, although that was not so much abstract as symbolic. Or someone wanted it to be symbolic. I seem to remember people saying it was a waste of a perfectly good parking lot.
...welcome to Lincoln. :)
