About the same time the Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses exhibit that I mentioned yesterday opened in Seattle this spring, a memorial to Kurt Cobain was unveiled in his home town of Aberdeen. The unveiling was gruesomely on the anniversary of Cobain's suicide. I like this short AP piece on the dedication because it says "A diverse group of fans and Aberdeen residents, many born after Cobain's 1994 death, attended the ceremony." as if an attendees age was somehow relevant.
The memorial is pretty simple: A guitar on a pedestal and a ribbon of metal with a few lyrics on it. Cobain grew up nearby and as the story goes would often hang out under the bridge when he wanted to get away from everything. The song, Something in the Way was inspired by those times under the bridge.
It's pretty peaceful there. I spent a few minutes sitting on that bench, listening to the cars pass overhead, reading the graffiti and checking out the offerings. Nobody else visited the park while I was there.
Then it was time to walk around downtown Aberdeen, but I'm getting ahead of myself. There's still more to see in Astoria.
I really like the memorial.
One of your very best posts, IMHO!
