The new movie musical version of The Producers is being filmed at Columbia yesterday and today. These are the signs on Nathan Lane's and Matthew Broderick's trailers. No, I did not see either actor. Uma Thurman's trailer was across the street. I didn't see her either. Uma's father is a professor at Columbia. Maybe I saw him, maybe I didn't. I don't know what he looks like.
Speaking of Uma, years ago I went to see Even Cowgirls Get the Blues after hearing a report on NPR that the movie was doing so poorly that there were screenings at which only one person showed up. That struck me as a cool thing to do, be the only person in the theater. For a few minutes I was the only person in the theater but then a couple walked in just before the movie started. Drat!
A few weeks later Suture opened in Saginaw. At the time I think there were three multiplexes in Saginaw. One of them would show independent and foreign movies in one of their theaters. Since Suture was filmed in black and white I figured it wouldn't draw many people. I left work early one day to catch a late-afternoon showing. It worked! I was the only person. Everyone should have a private showing of a movie in a big theater at least once.
Soon after I watched the movie that the multiplex stopped showing indie films. Presenting movies to an audience of one isn't a big moneymaker I guess. After that, people in mid-Michigan had to travel a hundred miles to Ann Arbor or Detroit to watch anything other than mainstream Hollywood movies.
